Today we had a noon lunch reservation at Le Cellier Volnaysien in the village of Volnay. It was a delightful meal as we were greeted by the owner, Natalie. Then we drove up into the hills passing through St Romain and Oches situated below the limestone cliffs. Then back to Beaune to finish the leftovers and pack. Off to Vienne tomorrow. 
The day is done and we are enjoying the warm sun sitting on the sidewalk in front of our home. Tonight we are eating the rotisserie chicken, ribs and potatoes from the market. Fortunately we will run out of days before we run out of new wines to taste. 
Beaune is a facitating town with its surrounding wall, houses stacked together at varying heights and narrow winding streets that cars still navigate. Hard to present in pictures but marvelous to experience in a perimeter stroll of the town. 
After a lunch and wine break, we visited the Hostel Dieu where we experienced the fascinating story of Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, who founded and funded this charitable hospital in the 1400's. It continued to operate until 1976 when a new hospital was built in Beaune. The slate roof and interior architecture were grand to see in person. The patients in the shown infirmity were tended by an order of Sisters thoughout the years. At this point we were wearing down and required another hydration break and then returned home for the evening. 
As the morning moved on so did we, visiting the Collégiale Notre-Dame. Not nearly as large and grandiose as the larger cathedrals but every bit as historic and moving. Next we found the Musée du Vin. It has an interesting presentation of wine history and artifacts related to the area. The picture is actually a tapestry that is several hundred years old and I think that the wine bottles were sufficiently aged before opening. 
Today is all about Beaune. We are up early (some of us that is) and on the move to the Place des Halles for the Saturday market. Early on the streets were nearly empty but soon people were everywhere. Largest market I have experienced. Fruits and
Charles was our guide through the vineyards and M. Leflaive, himself, lectured about the production of his wine shown in the upper and lower pictures. Lunch was conducted in the shown dining area. We completed our day in Beaune with a light dinner of escargots and wine. Bonne nuit.
